Computational Geophysics
This course introduces computational methods and programming techniques for solving geophysical problems. Students learn to develop computational solutions for geophysical data processing, numerical modeling, visualization, and analysis, with emphasis on efficient and reproducible approaches to solving practical geophysical problems.
Course Content
The course covers fundamental concepts of computational geophysics, including numerical methods, computational algorithms, data structures, and programming for geophysical applications. Topics include numerical solutions of mathematical and physical problems, matrix operations, interpolation, optimization, numerical integration and differentiation, linear and nonlinear systems, and forward and inverse modeling. Students also learn computational approaches for processing and analyzing geophysical data, including gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical, and other potential-field datasets. Emphasis is placed on programming, data visualization, computational efficiency, model validation, and the development of practical computational workflows for geophysical research and exploration.
