TG4045
Exploration Geophysics
This course introduces the fundamental principles and applications of geophysical exploration methods for characterizing subsurface geological conditions and identifying natural resources. It covers the theory, data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and integration of various geophysical methods, with emphasis on their application in mineral, hydrocarbon, geothermal, groundwater, and other subsurface investigations.
Course Content
The course covers the fundamentals of geophysical exploration, including the physical properties of Earth materials, geological controls on geophysical responses, survey design, data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and uncertainty analysis. Topics include gravity and magnetic methods, electrical resistivity and electromagnetic methods, seismic reflection and refraction methods, and their applications in mineral, hydrocarbon, geothermal, and groundwater exploration. The course also discusses potential-field data processing and interpretation techniques, including regional-residual separation, derivatives, filtering, anomaly analysis, and forward and inverse modeling. Emphasis is placed on integrating multiple geophysical methods with geological and other supporting data to develop reliable subsurface models and solve exploration problems.
